His Most Wanted is book 2 of Sandra Jones’ The River Rogues series. In this stand-alone, the reader meets Christopher “Kit” Wainwright, a recovering gambler and former brothel owner. He is determined to do something that would have made his uncle proud, which sets him on a mission to fulfill his uncle’s last wishes - specifically repaying a debt. In so doing, he crosses paths with Cora Riley while fighting to overcome his vices. She’s a quiet and wise woman who was born into the bordello world. Ever since she took over business as the madam, she has been fighting to make the bordello safer and self-sufficient by paying off the sheriff and becoming a secret outlaw vigilante, Velvet Grace. But Kit’s assignment as interim lawman sends him chasing after her alias, which has killed the sheriff she's been paying. This creates an obstacle, not only for their individual missions, but also for their budding attraction, especially if he discovers that Velvet Grace is Cora.
First, can we just talk about that cover? I love it. But there is much less grit and gun slinging than the cover would imply. To be completely honest, Jones creates a Wild West in His Most Wanted that is primarily focused on the developing romance between two characters and that's okay. She takes two stereotypical western characters, gives them a unique twist, and casts them as folks just trying to be better people and improve their lives ... but Wild West circumstances just don’t allow them to be those people very easily. The romance was a bit more sensual than the cover and description implied, but it was a nicely written, quick read with a good sub plot and well-developed characters.
