Homeless Bear by Claire Carey follows an army veteran's struggles to navigate civilian life. After his mother abandoned him at a tender age, Sean grew up raised by his adoptive mother, Aunt Josephine, and his older siblings, Khan, Vy, May, and Jon. An army veteran with multiple tours of Afghanistan, Sean returns home to buy his own place and is eager to begin a new phase when a debit card scam turns his life upside-down. Despite his girlfriend Maria's wishes, Sean refuses to accept help from friends and family and is determined to stand on his own. But things don't go according to plan, and Sean soon finds himself homeless. After a stint in a hostel, he finds employment on a farm owned by a kind elderly couple. Will Sean be able to change his precarious situation?
Claire Carey's riveting slice-of-life story demonstrates the indomitable nature of the human spirit, showcasing how resilience and grit help us pull through amid adversity. Homeless Bear mirrors the real-life stories of countless army veterans who struggle to adapt to civilian life after retirement and face issues like homelessness. Despite the subject matter, the novel ends optimistically and offers hope. The plot is nicely paced, with a few well-paced curveballs that take you by surprise. Sean is the kind of person you want to root for. The scenes focusing on the relationships between Sean and his family and his girlfriend were some of my favorites from the book. All in all, a captivating drama novel with lots of heart.
