Horns and Bark by M.M.D.A follows several characters as they try to survive in a brutal world shaped by ancient curses, divine betrayal, and an oppressive empire. At the center is Zethos, a non-human outcast burdened with horns, stone-like skin, and constant pain. He keeps to himself in a large forest until a prophecy forces him to leave for his own safety. During his quest, Zethos tries to save a young girl from soldiers and later meets a mystic who helps him understand his origins. At the same time, his closest companion, Jill, goes through her own dangerous trial to gain the strength she needs to protect him. Meanwhile, Alith, another character, is taken into a cruel religious order, and Gail, a young refugee, struggles to survive under imperial rule. As their stories draw closer together, can any of them escape the fate the gods placed on their world?

Horns and Bark by M.M.D.A blends dark fantasy with elements of myth, horror, and political drama, creating a world that feels harsh but deeply thought out. The narrative switches between different characters’ viewpoints, which makes it easier to see how each person is affected by the events occurring around them. It also helped me follow the bigger conflict without becoming overwhelmed by the details. The writing moves between simple dialogue and vivid descriptions, giving the world a heavy, unsettling atmosphere that fits the themes of exile, oppression, and survival. The characters change as they face fear, loyalty, and tough decisions, and even those who look monstrous are written with surprising detail and empathy. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy dark, morally complex fantasy stories. I am confident they'll enjoy reading it as much as I did.
