Humans Don't Have Horns: A Crown of Blood and Magic, Book 1 by S.H. Schreiber transports readers to the land of Amada, where monstrous creatures, known as demichads, possess the power to destroy entire villages in mere minutes. The story revolves around Lian, the daughter of the King of Aldon. Her unique features make her an outcast in her kingdom. On the eve of her politically motivated marriage, Lian's camp is attacked by Cursed Ones. She is kidnapped by Daton, a Mongan warrior tasked with enacting a cruel punishment on her. But, as time progresses, Lian and Daton develop a close but forbidden bond. Gradually, their complex backstories unfold, and themes of concealed truths, loss, trauma, and revenge emerge into the light. Can these two enemies-turned-allies work together to save the different races of their land?
S.H. Schreiber has crafted a vibrant but barbarous and stratified world where religion, race, gender, and self-identity are deeply enmeshed with acts of rebellion and violence. Through Lian's and Daton's slowly intertwining journeys, the author skillfully explores the true nature of monstrosity, heroism, survival, personal vindication, and collective redemption. Lian and Daton's relationship does not develop superficially, but through carefully crafted character exchanges and emotionally revealing dialogue. Over time, they learn to navigate their feelings of mistrust and fear to become vulnerable with each other. Altogether, the storyline, pacing, and world-building are well-developed and engaging from start to finish. Humans Don't Have Horns is a must-read for fans of romantic fantasy and action-packed tales with compelling character moments.
