In Meredith Watson’s Hunted by a Cult, a small Texas town is where eighteen-year-olds Isaac and Marsha discover they are expecting a child, and where Isaac reveals the secret he has hidden since birth: white wings that mark him as a half-breed, relentlessly pursued by a secret cult that hunts others of his kind. Once a hidden recording exposes what he is, strangers begin arriving in town under false names, watching the couple’s every move and moving ever closer to the unborn child Marsha carries. What begins as a young marriage shaped by secrecy quickly turns into a race to protect their family from a cult whose interest lies not only in Isaac, but in the bloodline he may have passed on to his child. As bodies begin to surface and familiarity proves dangerous, Isaac and Marsha realize that those hunting him may have already entered their lives.
Meredith Watson’s Hunted by a Cult is a really unique premise that puts the relentless pursuit of Isaac and Martha at the core of the action. As a parent, Marsha declaring her pregnancy while they are still living in a cardboard box made me want to whisk them into a safe, comfortable apartment, but Watson does an excellent job of getting the couple to think on, and quite literally, off their feet. Isaac has wings, and they do take flight. The story has plenty of sizzle that shows how compatible they are in every way. The supernatural elements are sharply defined through Isaac’s retractable white wings and his vision-based sixth sense. With a writing style that is simple and straightforward, this story is great for young adults who enjoy paranormal suspense, cult fiction, and faith-inflected supernatural thrillers, where domestic life and the uncanny coexist. Recommended.
