Author Biography

Heather was raised to give 100% to every endeavor. Since her earliest experiences in Girl Scouts, numerous volunteer events and organizations, she has always sought to make a difference. After graduating college, she served our country with 23 years of distinguished Naval service. Dedicated to self-improvement, she obtained masters degrees in Asian studies, conflict resolution, cyber security policy and emergency management while on active duty. She is qualified as a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) with the International Association of Emergency Mangers and earned a PhD in Emergency Management with a special study focus on childcare recovery. 
As a working parent of two, she became aware of just how much of a gap existed in emergency preparedness and recovery training and resources for childcare providers and vowed to use her experiences, education, and more importantly, motivation, to help improve current limitations. In addition to publishing books to help teach children about what to do in case of disaster, she has also created a nonprofit, BLOCKS. BLOCKS' mission is to help prepare childcare for disaster.

They have just issued a hurricane watch and Niko is curious to know what a hurricane is. Aunt Sarah tells him that it is a big storm and explains how it forms over tropical waters, like the ocean. Lily wants to know if a hurricane is like a thunderstorm and Aunt Sarah tells her that hurricanes are bigger than thunderstorms and because of that they bring stronger rains, more winds, and even flooding. Niko is excited because Uncle Brian has told him that they can help hurricane-proof the house tomorrow. Uncle Brian tells them that the hurricane warning has been upgraded and they have been asked to evacuate. Aunt Sarah tells Niko what an evacuation means. She has to go to the hospital to help. They are all ready to go to the shelter when they realize Niko's stuffed frog Dino is missing. Will they find him before going to the shelter?

Hurricane Vacation by Dr. Heather L. Beal is an informative and educational story that explains in detail about hurricanes. Children will learn all about hurricanes once they finish reading this story. The questions and activities at the end of the book make it interactive and easy for children to understand what exactly a hurricane is. Jasmine L. Mills brings the concept, the characters, and the scenes to life with her wonderful illustrations. It is a good book to use for read-aloud sessions in classrooms and children will have fun participating in the activities and questions together in the classroom. This story is the best way youngsters can learn about hurricane preparedness.
