Izzie tries to be invisible every day during Reading Circle, and she succeeds until the day Miss Mira, the teacher, calls on her to read a passage. Izzie froze. Soon, the class was giggling, and Izzie pleaded that Miss Mira skip her on the grounds of ill health. During recess, Izzie sat by herself, wondering why words didn’t make sense when she tried to read, whereas it looked easy for the other kids. As a ball rolled by, Izzie instinctively got up and kicked it hard, and it went straight into the center of the goal. Everyone on the field cheered for Izzie, and she was happier than ever. For the rest of recess, Izzie ruled the field. After recess, Reggie, who had struggled with playing football, joined Izzie on her walk back to class. By the time they reached their class, Izzie and Reggie had struck a deal to help each other with what they found difficult. Izzie Can Do It! by Shannon Wernemar is a story about doing difficult things.

Izzie Can Do It! by Shannon Wernemar is a lovely picture book telling a simple but inspiring story with lessons on individual differences, helping others, and the importance of believing in oneself. I liked the colorful drawings by Kseniia Kudriavtseva because they captured the characters’ emotions well and added life to the story. I also liked the vocabulary used and believe it can improve the intended audience’s vocabulary. The topics of this story, the inability to read or do sports, affect many children, and I believe they can learn a thing or two from Izzie and Reggie.

Izzie Can Do It! by Shannon Wernemar is about a young girl named Izzie who has a hard time reading out loud in class. During Reading Circle each day, she sits there nervously, hoping she won’t be picked, and when she is, she sometimes freezes up. One afternoon at recess, a soccer ball rolls next to Izzie's feet, and she decides to kick it. To her joy, she's really good at it, so she ends up joining the other kids as they cheer her on. Izzie becomes friends with Reggie, who isn't strong at playing soccer, but he's very skilled at reading. Reggie offers to help Izzie with her reading, which makes her happy. In the end, will she be able to succeed at both soccer and reading?

Izzie Can Do It! by Shannon Wernemar is a children’s picture book that shows how friendship and encouragement help young people grow. I appreciated how the story showed Izzie’s challenges with reading while also highlighting her soccer talent, making her achievements seem real and relatable. I enjoyed the simple way in which the author shows that Izzie is able to learn from her mistakes, try new things, and build a supportive friendship circle. The artwork by Kseniia Kudriavtseva really adds movement and feeling to the story, making it easy to picture the classroom, the playground, and what the characters are going through. I found myself connecting with Izzie and her effort to feel more confident. Her story reminded me that everyone has their own strengths and struggles. All in all, I think this book is uplifting, easy to read, and shows why teamwork and self-belief matter.
