“I Am a Squirmy Wormy” by Robin A. Knaggs is a grandmother’s story for her grand-daughter. Whenever it was time for a diaper change or bath or bed time or whatever, the author would make up little rhymes to keep her little “squirmy wormy” calmed down enough to finish the task at hand. Noting the success she had in calming the child, she decided to put pen to paper and share her rhymes with the rest of the world. The resulting book, “I Am a Squirmy Wormy”, makes good use of color and illustrations so that it can be read to the child as a bedtime story, as well as used in part whenever the child becomes particularly “squirmy”. It is well-targeted for the preschool set.

This story is certainly not rocket science and it is not intended to be. Nor does it have to be, to serve its intended purpose. The rhymes are simple, and should appeal to the very young. Likewise, the colors are attractive and the illustrations are well-suited to their purposes. It was easy for me to envision reading this book to my own one year old grandson, and just as easy to envision him sitting (relatively) quietly in my lap as I read it to him. I look forward to my next opportunity to prove that! This is a very simple, easy to understand and easy to read story for the very young, and would be a welcome addition to any infant’s blossoming library. I certainly recommend it, and even think it would make an appropriate baby shower gift for the expectant mother-to-be!
