I Deserve More! by Anna Svetchnikov is an inspiring picture book that encourages children to identify the amazing community and opportunities around them and be grateful for them. Claire is discontented with many things in her life. Though she has everything a girl her age could ever want, she is tired of her responsibilities toward her parents and friends. One day, Claire and her pet cat, Archie, find a magic wand. Claire is excited at the possibility of her wildest dreams coming true through the power of the wand. Meanwhile, in the world of magic, Misty, a young, kind-hearted fairy, is distraught after losing her magic wand that has fallen into the human world. Though others offer their help, Misty makes a courageous, responsible decision to look for her wand in the human world.

In I Deserve More!, Anna Svetchnikov imagines a fascinating event when the human and magic worlds connect. In the story, Claire’s self-absorbed, unappreciative nature is contrasted to Misty’s. Though she is surrounded by people who support and love her, Claire is constantly angry at them and chooses to focus on their expectations of her. The book’s illustrations are elaborate and vivid. They add to the excitement brought out by the scenes in the story. Towards the end, the book contains therapeutic exercises and helpful coping skills that can be utilized by young children in managing anger. Insightful information about narrative therapy, a type of therapy that helps a person externalize the issue that they are facing, is also included. I found I Deserve More! by Anna Svetchnikov to be an engaging picture book that contains crucial lessons for both young and adult readers.
