I Know It’s Daytime by Kelley Kay Bowles is a prequel to The Meld YA series. Anabelle Fleming is nervous about her first day of high school in a new town. Her mother, Lily, and her father are divorced, and Anabelle often wishes they could have been a traditional family. However, as she grows more familiar with her town and school, Anabelle sees hallucinations around the people she meets. She has experienced them for several years, so she easily distinguishes them as illusions instead of dreams, but she worries about her sanity. The visions are familiar, but she can only decode some, recognizing potential friends and people with harmful intentions. Anabelle’s life changes quickly, and she wonders if she should share her secret to keep the ones she cares for out of danger.
Kelley Kay Bowles has done a brilliant job of creating relatable characters! You will find at least one personality in her story that you can identify with on some level. Gentle nods to pop culture and literary references are present as the characters learn about figures like William Shakespeare and discuss a Ray Bradbury novel. Unlike some books, Bowles doesn’t fully expose the differences in her characters, choosing instead to weave magical realism onto the pages gently. Strong themes of strength and friendship are present, and the story moves along at a medium pace. I Know It’s Daytime is an excellent story for teens and experienced readers who enjoy young adult novels with strong female figures.
