I Love My Little Brother by Serene Chia and Rita Nelson is a book designed to help an older child adjust to a new baby in the family. Have you recently had a new baby? Is your older child finding it hard to adjust? This is the story of a little girl struggling with the arrival of her new baby brother. When her parents spend more time with the new sibling, she begins to think they don’t love her anymore. A conversation with her mother soon sets her straight, and she learns a lot about helping to look after her new baby brother.
I Love My Little Brother by Serene Chia is full of lovely illustrations by Rita Nelson and is a wonderful story about a little girl who is a little jealous of her new baby brother – until she has a conversation with her mother. This book is about teaching children not to be envious of a new arrival and that there is more than enough love to go around. It’s about teaching children that sometimes moms and dads need help too. It also helps to strengthen the natural bonds families have and helps children to understand their emotions during such a time and learn to handle them. This is a well-written tale. The illustrations help children see what is happening, not just hear it. It is down to earth, written in plain language, and is a book every parent should have to read with their children when they are about to introduce a new baby brother or sister to the family. Children don’t understand how to deal with emotions, and this is the perfect book to make them realize that their feelings are valid but that there is always another, better way to deal with them.
