In Chains by Michelle Abbott is a story of love, resilience, and compassion set in the countryside area of Kent, United Kingdom. Savannah, a young writer from London, left the hustle and bustle of her city life to seek refuge in her brother Simon´s countryside home. Trying to run away from an abusive boyfriend and searching for peace, Savannah ended up finding more than she expected in Kent. On the road to emotional recovery, she fell in love with Kayden, her brother´s slave. Disregarding all conventions of the time, Savannah did everything possible to make this love possible, even the unimaginable. Together Savannah and Kayden learned many things together and went on many “adventures” to endure the hurdles of an impossible love.
In Chains is the first novel from the series “In Chains” and is a refreshing love story. The characters are believable and genuine. The story line is somewhat predictable, but with a few twists. Ms Abbot found the right balance between exploring the story of the main characters´ life and their romance. The author uses sexual content without going overboard. The secondary characters are well depicted. Although there is no chronological description of time, the story was developed in a time that slavery was accepted in the society. That made the love story pretty appealing. The end of the story made me wonder what comes next for the couple; it gave me the feeling of wanting more. I will definitely watch for the sequel.
