In Light of Recent Events by Amy Klinger is a story that takes the workplace novel to a whole new level. It opens with a rather mundane scenario of the main protagonist’s life as she describes her neighborhood and her workplace. The year is 1996. Audrey Rohmer is a middle manager in the Economics Department of the Business Division of the College Textbooks Unit of Preston House Publishing. She finds a kindred spirit in her administrative assistant, Pooter, because they share the same disinterest in a promotion or climbing the corporate ladder. The only thing that makes her office life more bearable is her affair with her boss. But her bland existence is about to take an intriguing turn when James Keefner, an old family friend who has become a big Hollywood name, seeks refuge at her place to avoid bad publicity after punching his brother-in-law.
In Light of Recent Events has an original plot in that no reader can guess with absolute certainty what will happen next, and this keeps you engaged throughout its pages. Audrey’s narration is just the right blend of humor, compassion, and idiosyncrasy that makes her interesting and understandable. I can perfectly relate to her apathetic attitude toward her workplace, as I had my own share of office politics that contributed nothing to my growth, and you may well feel for her too. It is teeming with fresh jokes that bite and Amy Klinger’s skill at painting sensory details puts you right in every scene like an unseen observer. This is the type of women’s fiction that even guys would be happy to devour, as it intelligently explores human relationships on a non-cheesy level. In Light of Recent Events is truly a blast, and I can’t recommend it enough.
