In the Midst of Wolves by PL Novak explores friendship, survival, grief, and love themes. This coming-of-age story follows the lives of two close friends brought together by tragedy. After eight-year-old Leigh Blackwell’s father disappears, she is left to care for her mother, who breaks down soon after his sudden departure. Leigh meets Thomas Paterson, a homeless nine-year-old who becomes her protector and helps Leigh make ends meet. Their friendship helps them survive the worst of times but becomes strained when Leigh leaves New York and is drawn to a man struggling with the memories of his failed marriage. God’s plans for their lives unfold even during hard times.
This is a moving story with essential themes anchored by exceptional characters. The story is written with flawless pacing and captivating dialogue. Leigh and Tom’s friendship is touching and provides thought-provoking lessons. The 1890s New York City setting provides a suitable background for the novel. The brutal reality that the children face is explored, and their deep, loving friendship balances the plot’s heartbreaking parts. I appreciated the faith messages included. They are expertly threaded into the story through the main characters’ lives. Humor and surprising revelations further enhance this captivating story. The conclusion wonderfully wraps up the story as it revisits its themes and provides room for reflection. In the Midst of Wolves by PL Novak is an extraordinary historical novel with significant themes and unforgettable characters.
