Based on a Christian outlook, Innocence by Mary June Rincon is a collection of poems that touch on love, vision, direction, and timing. An author and a minister, Rincon writes from the heart and ingeniously presents different life circumstances intertwined with spirituality. The poems reflect the intimate emotions of the author as she goes through everyday life encounters. Some of the poems highlight several of Mary June Rincon’s life-changing moments while some reflect her Christian journey. The poems largely emphasize the writer’s relationship with God through different circumstances. In some of the poems, she presents Him as a constant help in her time of need.
While reading Innocence by Mary June Rincon, I loved that the author’s experiences were reflected in the poems. It is clear that each poem portrays an intimate part of her life. Her encounters as a minister and nursing assistant are shown in the poems and they gave me a glimpse of what her life has been like. Mary June Rincon’s honesty, openness and her ability to engage me emotionally were commendable. I also love the themes covered within the book, which include love, salvation, praise, direction, prayer, and timing. She expounds on these themes skilfully. Further, some particular lines in one of the poems, My Savior Reigns, were very inspiring. “I think of you always, I dream and your words come out alive.” As I read these words, I couldn’t help but admire the author’s intimacy with her savior. The book is engaging and will leave any fan of Christian poetry with a desire to grow in their relationship with God.
