It Takes a Spy...Secrets and Seduction Book One by Sheridan Jeane is a mixture of historical romance and a “whodunit” mystery. Cecilia Paring is engaged to marry Devin Montlake, and she has been drawn to him since she was a child. She is impulsive and likes to think for herself. Devin is going to be a barrister, likes an orderly life, and wants Cecilia to be a proper barrister's wife. Cecilia's father is set to auction off the family jewels to provide a dowry for Cecilia and her sister. He is moving their mother away for health reasons. The jewels are stolen during a ball the night before the auction is to take place, and circumstances make Devin the prime suspect. Cecilia and her sister must help clear his name and figure out who the real thief is.
Sheridan Jeane has provided an enjoyable story in an interesting setting with likeable characters. Devin and Cecilia are drawn to each other with palpable chemistry, and as I was reading I felt like I knew them and believed in their loyalty to one another, even though they both experienced some doubts about their relationship. The mystery angle was well written and sometimes humorous. I enjoyed the bond between the sisters; they bickered but they had each others' backs. It was real. The spark between Devin and Cecilia was fanned into flames by the conclusion of the book and their happily ever after. It was a delicious ending. I liked It Takes a Spy...Secrets and Seduction Book One and would recommend it.
