It's a Dragon-Eat-Dragon World by Ty Burson is the second novel in the young adult fantasy series, Modern Dragon Chronicles. Steve lives in a small town surrounded by giant redwoods on the edge of the ocean. Two years ago, he had learned that his father was the caretaker of the dragon living in this area. The dragon protected the land with its magic, and he and his friends had barely escaped the rage of Mammon, the demon, and his human thugs. Not having heard from the dragon since then, it seemed life was back to normal, or so Steve thought. With the sudden appearance of a strange family in town one day, things take a chaotic turn and Steve’s less usual gifts return in a deeper, more powerful form that puts his life in danger. It is understandable why Steve simply wants a normal life, without all the overwhelming magic or his annoying stutter which is, in fact, the ancient language of the dragons which, apparently, no other human being can speak as fluently as him. Old friends and new friends come to his aid as they all prepare for an ancient dragon battle.
The second volume reveals exciting details about the hidden world of dragons through short chapters and entwining story threads. Since it does not rely much on information from its previous novel, It's a Dragon-Eat-Dragon World makes a great read on its own as the crucial parts are recalled by the characters. The story is dynamic and it unravels at a satisfying pace as the mystery flavored adventure twists and turns with surprises. I recommend It's a Dragon-Eat-Dragon World to both children and young adults since they will enjoy the elusive world of modern-day dragons and their interactions with humans.
