What does it really mean to be seven? For a spirited Adalyn in It’s Amazing to Be Seven by Emma Meyer, it’s a year of friendship hiccups, big feelings, and moments of unexpected bravery. Whether it’s her party going sideways, overcoming fear, feeling excluded, or comparing herself to others, this chapter book is packed with relatable moments for young readers, each brought to life with easy-to-picture descriptions, kid-friendly humor, and warm-hearted lessons presented in a natural way. Gabriella Shcherban’s cheerful illustrations add just the right visual charm to complement Adalyn’s journey. From the singing mermaid disaster to the mashed potato ‘ice cream’ trick, kids will be laughing one minute and reminded in the next that even the trickiest feelings, while difficult to understand, are nothing they can’t handle in the end.

Although Alexander and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day isn’t a chapter book, after reading Adalyn’s journey, I found myself reminded of the mishaps and the ups and downs Alexander went through. Both also have a similar message that some days may be terrible, but tomorrow is a new day. From an educator’s point of view, It’s Amazing to Be Seven by Emma Meyer is an absolute gem! It’s perfect for reading one chapter a day during the morning meeting. It can also spark meaningful conversations about feelings, how to manage them, resolving conflicts, and practicing problem-solving skills. Adalyn doesn’t always get things right, and she pouts, yells, and even stomps away, but that’s precisely what makes her so real to kids. She proves that a few mistakes don’t ruin the day, and it’s all just part of being seven. It’s Amazing to Be Seven has a lot of heart, plenty of funny moments, and just enough chaos to keep young readers hooked.
