It's Not a Race by A.M. Shah and Melissa Arias Shah Ph.D revolves around 4-year-old Ashton who thinks he is the best and smartest. Ashton always likes to win and thinks no one can beat him. He finds his baby sister Ashley annoying as she is slow in getting ready for school. Ashton wants to try to make Ashley become a bit faster. His parents explain to him that he and his sister are a team, they are not competing with each other, and he cannot be a winner without the entire team winning. The story highlights the importance of teamwork and what that means, and what is actually necessary to win.

The message the author conveys through the story makes the book special and ideal for kids to understand the importance of teamwork. The illustrations are adorable and delightful and they give a good pace and movement to the story and the scenes. The characters come alive with the help of these illustrations which connect well with readers. It's a good bedtime storybook and can also be used for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries. I like the concept of teamwork and the principle of 'necessary' and what that means, which the author conveys through the story of Ashton and his sister Ashley. Books like this should be introduced to kids when they begin reading as it's easy for parents and teachers to teach them good concepts and thoughts with the help of stories and colorful pictures.
