Jagger and Bode Have a Field Day by L. Ellis is a children's book following the puppies at the School of Muddy Paws. They are disappointed when their library floods, destroying all the books, including the one they were eagerly reading, Biscuit and Bone. To cope with the loss, Mrs. Wigglebottom suggests that each puppy draw their favorite things from the library and share what they will miss most. Inspired by Bode, the puppies organize a book drive, collecting donations from their families and neighbors. Despite a storm threatening their Field Day event, the sun shines, and the day is a success, with games and Bode’s snack station drawing much attention. The puppies raise enough books, and the story ends with Mrs. Wigglebottom reading Biscuit and Bone to the class.
Jagger and Bode Have a Field Day, written by L. Ellis and illustrated by Alejandra Barajasan, is an enjoyable and heartwarming read. The writing is pitch-perfect and filled with some sweet humor even in the sadness, while the colorful, contemporary animation-style illustrations bring the pups and their emotions to life. Barajas’ bold color palette makes each page a visual delight, perfectly embodying the playful energy of the school’s puppy students. I like that this unique story is one of real teamwork and creativity, and it is a community effort to restore their beloved library. The distinct personality of each puppy shines through, especially Bode’s love for food and Jagger’s leadership. This story beautifully conveys the power of community and perseverance, leaving readers with a smile and making for a great addition to the bedtime rotation. Recommended.
