Jojo Giraffe’s Big Laugh is another entry in the EQ Explorers: Little Adventures for a Big Happy Life series by Kim Linette. JoJo meets a little girl named Kali who is hiding in a tree, crying because she has been teased by the other kids. Jojo invites Kali to ride on her neck and shares with her that perhaps if she sees things from a different perspective, she will learn to laugh and not take things personally. JoJo tells her when she was young the other giraffes teased her too. JoJo’s mother shares with her that often what others say about you says more about them than you. Jojo and Kali travel through the jungle, talking with animals, and Kali comes to see that JoJo is right.
Jojo Giraffe’s Big Laugh is an excellent addition to the EQ Explorers series. Kim Linette has done a masterful job of writing a truly accessible and delightful story that incorporates an emotional skill that many adults have failed to master. All kids have been teased or laughed at for something and sharing the skill of not taking things personally will help them to have happier, healthier emotional lives. James Loram’s illustrations bring the African world to life. He includes a multitude of African animals in his illustrations. Kids will also enjoy hunting for Buddy Bee throughout the book. Social-Emotional Learning is a valuable skill that all children need to have in their skill set. Jojo Giraffe’s Big Laugh should be required reading in all early childhood classrooms.
