Kauai Spies and Bald-faced Lies: Kent and Katcha II by Larry and Rosemary Mild is a treat for fans of fast-paced, exhilarating thrillers. Kent Brukner was once an American spy, and it has been five years since he escaped from Russia with his lover, Katcha, now his wife, an American citizen and a college student. Kent is a lawyer in Honolulu, working on a probate case in New York that involves a fraudulent heir to the Volkovs. He gets a case to partner with a company set to build a new technology for a missile-tracking recorder in Kauai. But the son of the Kauai Technical Systems partner, Rudy Fong, is kidnapped. The kidnappers are not after money. They demand a special kind of ransom: they want classified schematics for the new military recorder. Kent must navigate a treacherous world filled with sleeper agents and corporate intrigue to expose a deep-cover spy and save the boy.

The espionage in Kauai Spies and Bald-faced Lies made this story a page-turner, especially Kent, a complex character with a solid background in the field. He is at the heart of the tension between his shadowy past and legal ethics. The Volkovs are depicted in the story as a symbol of immigrant hard work and resilience. Characters like Vladimir Breskovny are elaborately drawn and cleverly written to inspire dread and fear in readers. The writing is atmospheric, and the spellbinding descriptions are balanced by the dialogue that crackles through the pages. Larry and Rosemary Mild examine the trauma from the Soviet Union era while successfully developing loyalty and family as core values for the characters. The suspense was biting, and the unpredictability in the plot transformed this story.
