Things could not have gotten worse for Kin Hanford. His family life is in shambles and he is sinking into mounting debt. A reprieve looks to be coming his way when he and the members of his marauding crew come into possession of a unique map that leads to a massive treasure. The only snag is that treasures of this magnitude attract the kind of attention the Damn Shames do not need at this point. Only time will tell if Kin can solve his myriad of problems in Kinfolk by August Niehaus.
It's a rip-roaring treasure hunt in August Niehaus's Kinfolk but the action takes place in the vast reaches of space. This is the first book in the Mutiny Of Pirates series so Niehaus takes extra time and attention to craft the setting in which this adventure is built. The characters are well defined with their origin stories completely taken care of as quickly as possible to get the reader rapidly into the adventure. The principal character's motivations are easy enough to identify with, once you get past his sometimes annoying habit of misbehaving in the presence of any women who show the slightest interest in him. The skirmishes between the different factions in the story are described with an impressive amount of detail going into every action that takes place. This created a realistic-sounding story despite its science-fiction roots. The best part of this novel is the way Niehaus tells it. The author uses interesting conversations and nail-biting encounters to keep the reader riveted. Kinfolk is the kind of story that adventure genre lovers will instantly like.
