In this apocalyptic world, where the undead stalk the streets in search of human flesh, survival is a constant struggle, and trust among the living is just as dangerous as the threat of the dead. Renee has seen her fair share of death during these past few years of humanity’s slow extinction, but never thought that she could be one of the reasons for humanity’s fall. Endless fighting, endless scouting, endless supply runs. Renee and the other survivors were running to escape death, but how long can they truly outrun the inevitable? She had just about given up when, by luck or misfortune, she met the King of the Dead, Zane. An odd sense of connection lingers between them, and Zane is determined to keep her. What past do these two have, and will this strange attraction between them be the answer Renee needs to save the world? Read King of the Dead by Ryana Hunter to find out!
Finding unexpected love in an apocalyptic setting felt dark yet emotionally satisfying. The attraction between Zane and Renee was palpable. I could almost imagine the static in the air between them. Despite Renee’s understandable dislike of Zane, strangely enough, she found herself drawn to him. In a way, this must have felt like a betrayal to the comrades who died under his power, and she tried her best to fight off these confusing feelings, which did not align with her plan for revenge. Ryana Hunter did an excellent job of balancing the “morally grey" romance between the two main characters. Renee’s emotions challenged her constantly as she struggled to do what she believed was right versus what her heart felt. This was perfectly conveyed throughout the story, and the tension that built up had me on the edge of my seat. Zane's secrets were an added spice that could potentially change the balance between the two, and finding out what he was hiding had me turning the pages relentlessly, eager to reach the end. Renee and Zane’s connection thrives on uncertainty and is rooted in conflicting values. If you want sizzling chemistry with a unique, apocalyptic plotline and characters who fall in love despite everything that has happened, then King of the Dead by Ryana Hunter is definitely for you!
