Attorney Leyla James accepts an offer to escape to Florida for six months to escape winter and COVID in the nation’s capital, when the impossible happens: a walk on a nature trail leads her to a dead body less than 24 hours after she arrives. She’s determined to distance herself from the case. Still, fate intervenes in the form of a local police chief with multiple personal problems and identifies a Jane Doe, entwined with a complicated cast of characters in the Seminole Nation. Soon, Leyla finds herself consulting on a case that exposes tribal politics, finances, family ties, and mystery in a tale that gets more complicated with every connection. Is there a chance of identifying this Jane Doe, or is she destined to be yet another missing woman in the Tribal Nation? Known But Unknown by A. Eveline explores an intriguing world that exists alongside our own.
If you enjoy the Dark Winds series (based on novels by Tony Hillerman), then you’ll like Known But Unknown. It explores the issue of Native American issues from the “other side of the looking glass” by delving into the resources and limitations of a traditional criminal justice system that doesn’t fully understand or know the values and traditions of Native American culture. I especially like how it touches on the issue of Missing Indigenous Women, and how they are sadly dismissed as cold cases based on the assumption that they ran away seeking adventure in the wider world off the reservation. A. Eveline has woven a unique and intriguing mystery that will keep you guessing until the last page. Known But Unknown is a solid mystery with realistic characters and circumstances that readers can relate to. I highly recommend it.
