Lady Ghost by Kara Jacobson follows Mike Johnston, a maintenance worker in Red Wing, Minnesota, who starts seeing a mysterious female spirit on the third floor of an abandoned hospital in 2019. Mike has a gift for sensing things others can't, and when he finds an old green sea glass necklace on the property, it leads him straight to his elderly neighbor, Alan Cross. The story then goes back to 1967, when a young farm boy named Alan falls hard for Mae Swan, the daughter of his wealthy factory boss. Despite everything working against them, the two build something real, until tragedy tears them apart and leaves Mae's spirit trapped, waiting fifty years for someone to finally discover what happened to her.
Lady Ghost by Kara Jacobson surprised me with how naturally it blends a supernatural mystery with a grounded Midwestern love story. The way Kara brings 1967 Minnesota to life through small farm details feels completely authentic. You get wrapped up in Alan and Mae as a couple, which makes the impending heartbreak hit so much harder when it comes. Following Mike in the present timeline as he uncovers Alan's hidden history keeps the plot moving forward smoothly. At the same time, the quiet tension inside the vacant hospital gives the whole book a lingering atmospheric chill. The supernatural elements never feel like a cheap gimmick because they stay tied to a very human story about grief and memory. I really appreciated how patient the storytelling was throughout. It is a fantastic choice for anyone who enjoys haunting love stories or small-town mysteries with plenty of emotion.
