Ty Burson's Let Sleeping Dragons Lie: Modern Dragon Chronicles puts a quirky spin on traditional dragon tales. Steve's family hides a secret. They are the caretakers of a slumbering dragon that grants them a fair amount of blessings - so long as the dragon is kept asleep. The dragon's blissful sleep is about to be interrupted by two bumbling minions doing the bidding of an evil demon. Steve, his super-powered grandma, and a slew of other lovable characters must all find a way to keep the dragon from waking up in a grumpy rage.
Let Sleeping Dragons Lie is a rollicking and fun tale rife with guffaw-out-loud moments. The individual characters are imbued with distinct traits that poke fun at several fantasy stereotypes, as well as sometimes overturning these stereotypes altogether. Steve is an easy protagonist to root for, and his friends are all characters I'd want to read more about. The settings and locations are detailed, vibrant and alive; so much so that you could almost taste the salty seawater tang. The fluid writing and nice transitions make this novel very readable. The switch between character exploration and frenetic action is as smooth as can be. The action is fast-paced and very engaging. I loved Grandma's fight scenes - a beautiful mixture of ass-kickery and full-on hilarity. Ty Burson manages to capture every teenager's vivid desire for adventure. I sincerely hope that he completes the next book of this series soon so I can spend another sleepless night learning how to let sleeping dragons lie.
