Letters to La Nuit by Juan Zamora follows Olem Jazz as he dances through his life. A lifelong dancer who works as a mail courier at a maximum-security prison in Kingston, Ontario, Olem never stops moving to music even on the job. When five inmate letters go missing from his route, Olem barely notices until one of them airs live on La Nuit, Kingston's midnight radio show. Three dangerous prisoners escape at the same moment the broadcast goes live. The letter turns out to be the work of Étienne, a troubled young music student who deliberately funneled all five letters to the station, hoping one would go viral enough to launch his music career. As police scramble to catch Étienne and the escaped inmates, Olem gets pulled deeper into a conspiracy involving criminal associates, a mysterious politician, and even whispers of an assassination. While all this is going on, Olem and Étienne's shared love of music becomes the one fragile thread holding the whole situation together.

Author Juan Zamora created a beautiful story full of suspense and drama. Olem is such a fun, unusual protagonist, but I loved him. He dances his way around a maximum-security prison as though it were the most natural thing in the world. There is a clear contrast between his carefree personality and the danger of the prison. I loved the cinematic feel of the story and how light it felt in the moments when Olem felt light. The prologue with the radio hosts joking about ridiculous love letters sets the tone of the story and prepares the reader for what is about to come. Étienne created chaos, but you feel his desperation to have his music heard. Letters to La Nuit is a unique and refreshing story that I highly recommend!
