Lies in the Shadows by Jessica Schaub is a compelling and captivating read. Julia has spent her whole life as Julius, the king's sole heir to the throne and the current king. She has won the respect of her people and the loyalty of her soldiers, but none of them know she lies to them every day. While investigating a series of attacks, she begins to fear the deadly Leviathans have returned. Jessica Schaub has created a cast of endearing characters, each full of heart and personality while also playing off Julia's own personality with a sharp humor and clever banter. Julia is a captivating and compelling hero with a strong will and endless courage, a compassionate heart and a quick wit. Her journey is a personal one as she must learn to trust those that have trusted her as king. She has to discover who she is and learn how to face her fears in order to find the strength it'll take to save her kingdom. Alma was a fairy wife to her father and has been the one to guide her as she's ruled. Alma is a mother figure to Julia, while also being a busybody in Julia's life and her strongest confidante. She's often upbeat and has a teasing sort of humor, but she also has a fierceness about her that comes through her protectiveness.
Darby is a brilliant character that embodies what it means to be a folk hero. As a child, she had to kill a bear in defense, but then took it upon herself to raise its orphaned cub as penance. Schaub delves into a gritty and stunning world with a unique twist on Leviathans. The threat of the Leviathans slowly builds up an image of vicious and bloodthirsty demons, but upon meeting these creatures, Schaub quickly twists them into more complex creatures by exploring the idea of good and evil through the guise of choice and free will. Lies in the Shadows is a story of faith and bravery, a journey of strength and loyalty, and the battle between good and evil.
