Richard Penner dives into the history of Earth, human civilization, and his own spiritual journey in this engaging memoir. Divided into two parts, Life As I Know It offers readers a captivating overview of human history, religion, and Richard's personal experiences of traveling all over the world. Drawing on his background as a biologist, Richard begins with the universe's creation with the Big Bang. The author explains how life evolved on Earth from single-celled microbes to the complex flora and fauna of the world today. The book also explores the origins of human civilization, agriculture, and writing, as well as the rise of organized religion. Born into a Mennonite family, as a young man, Richard drove to Rio de Janeiro with his friend for an enlightening experience. Later, in the eighties, he started his own seed farm.
Life As I Know It is a vibrant tapestry woven with history, adventure, and personal revelation. This book has a bit of everything. Richard Penner offers some profound insights about the human experience from both personal and broader perspectives. Toward the end, the author shares his own spiritual journey and sheds light on how his scientific and religious background shaped his outlook on the world at large. In the second part of the book, Richard provides some compelling observations on population management and the bleak state of primary education today. He also recounts his time in the Middle East and his role in the introduction of the hybrid sorghum to Sudan. This is one of the most unique memoirs I've read all year. If you're looking for some inspiration, this is the book for you.
