Life Stories: Educator, Painter, Pilot, Stained-Glass Artist chronicles the life and times of the author, Dr. Robert (Bob) Canady. From humble beginnings during the depression years of the 1930s, it was a path as rich and varied as it was rewarding. Canady was born on a farm in Arkansas but his industrious parents moved to Hurley, New Mexico, to find employment. His schooling did not reach any great heights. What Bob lacked academically, he made up for with an aptitude for art and football. This opened the way to a sports scholarship at university before he joined the Air Force during the Korean War to become a military policeman. Among other talents, he drew cartoons, finding ample subject matter in the military, and using these to raise awareness of issues. He returned to college and discovered that he had a talent for acting. Further study led him to become a teacher and he developed an interest in the Montessori system of education, later founding a school. More moves led to a doctorate, and he married again in 1979. He became a private pilot, which resulted in a life-changing incident in 1988 that led him to find God. His stellar academic career was echoed by his wife Shirley Raines. Heading into retirement, he took up stained-glass art, a pursuit at which he excelled and approached with evangelical enthusiasm.

Life Stories is a reflection on an extraordinary life by a multi-talented individual. It is a tale of perseverance and resilience that will inspire others. Despite beginning school classes a year too soon, he made the best of every opportunity. Continual self-improvement is a key theme. Through study and application, he came to understand how to balance his right brain tendencies and through this was able to help others improve their study methods. The book is generously illustrated with family photographs, cars, military facilities, and some of his more than 85 stained-glass creations. These are true works of art and grace many churches in poorer communities. He undertook this labor of love without payment and created around 100 stained-glass lamps sold to raise funds for charities. Some of his paintings are also featured. His reflections on establishing a relationship with God, the creativity that flowed from it, and his thoughts on the creation and evolution are both insightful and mirrored in his art. Robert Canady has provided an entertaining account of a life well lived that exemplifies his positive approach. It is a testimony to his vision and he is always seeking something more from life. The book is a delight to read and is highly recommended.

Life Stories is an extraordinary memoir by Dr. Robert Canady, a teacher and artist who had the chance to experience life from various perspectives. His journey started during the Great Depression and includes his roles in Hollywood, the Air Force, and as an educator. The memoir consists of narratives where he changed his career to being a stained-glass artist, made masterpieces for churches, and provided vision to the Montessori education center. In addition to his career successes, the author writes about life with his wife, his family, and the power that has inspired most of his works. Life, work, faith, and art are intimately connected in Canady’s life as he says: ‘I am an artist, a creative soul, and a faithful believer in God.’.

I appreciate Dr. Robert Canady's writing for the skill and ease with which his thoughts are conveyed. While most storytellers control their readers through their work, this one inspires readers to delve into his life journey. Every part makes a significant contribution and enhances the overall narrative; the information flow is expertly managed and ideal for the majority of readers. The characters, especially Canady and his wife Shirley, are warmly presented and reflect the spirit of collaboration and a shared objective. The memoir is profoundly personal and inspirational due to its recurring themes of fortitude, inventiveness, and a commitment to community. Life Stories is a timeless reminder of the beauty found in a life well lived, making it an intriguing read for anybody interested in the nexus of art, spirituality, and lifelong learning.

Life Stories: Educator, Painter, Pilot, Stained-Glass Artist by Robert Canady is a memoir in which Canady details his journey from a difficult childhood during the Great Depression to a multifaceted career. Born in Arkansas, Canady was exposed to financial hardship and an arduous education system before discovering that he had a natural talent for art. After earning a football scholarship to Western New Mexico University, Canady joined the Air Force during the Korean War, where he developed a reputation for cartooning. He later moved to Hollywood, briefly pursuing acting before turning to teaching. Canady became an art educator, contributing to early childhood education, and later taught at Marymount University. He also became a stained-glass artist, creating windows for churches, including significant projects for Trinity Methodist Church.

Life Stories by Robert Canady is a very thorough memoir that traces Canady’s extraordinary life from humble beginnings to a series of career moves in multiple fields. Canady’s straightforward writing style is conversational and extremely accessible, making it an enjoyable read for those who have a genuine interest in the journey of an everyday person. I really liked the inclusion of photographs, which serve as a wonderful supplement that not only preserves them as documents indefinitely but allows readers to connect faces to the significant events and people in Canady’s life. My favorite parts were concerning his service, for which I thank him. I think the biggest boon in the writing of this book will be as a legacy for Canady's family, who will no doubt treasure this slice of their own history for generations to come. Recommended.
