Life Stories: Educator, Painter, Pilot, Stained-Glass Artist chronicles the life and times of the author, Dr. Robert (Bob) Canady. From humble beginnings during the depression years of the 1930s, it was a path as rich and varied as it was rewarding. Canady was born on a farm in Arkansas but his industrious parents moved to Hurley, New Mexico, to find employment. His schooling did not reach any great heights. What Bob lacked academically, he made up for with an aptitude for art and football. This opened the way to a sports scholarship at university before he joined the Air Force during the Korean War to become a military policeman. Among other talents, he drew cartoons, finding ample subject matter in the military, and using these to raise awareness of issues. He returned to college and discovered that he had a talent for acting. Further study led him to become a teacher and he developed an interest in the Montessori system of education, later founding a school. More moves led to a doctorate, and he married again in 1979. He became a private pilot, which resulted in a life-changing incident in 1988 that led him to find God. His stellar academic career was echoed by his wife Shirley Raines. Heading into retirement, he took up stained-glass art, a pursuit at which he excelled and approached with evangelical enthusiasm.
Life Stories is a reflection on an extraordinary life by a multi-talented individual. It is a tale of perseverance and resilience that will inspire others. Despite beginning school classes a year too soon, he made the best of every opportunity. Continual self-improvement is a key theme. Through study and application, he came to understand how to balance his right brain tendencies and through this was able to help others improve their study methods. The book is generously illustrated with family photographs, cars, military facilities, and some of his more than 85 stained-glass creations. These are true works of art and grace many churches in poorer communities. He undertook this labor of love without payment and created around 100 stained-glass lamps sold to raise funds for charities. Some of his paintings are also featured. His reflections on establishing a relationship with God, the creativity that flowed from it, and his thoughts on the creation and evolution are both insightful and mirrored in his art. Robert Canady has provided an entertaining account of a life well lived that exemplifies his positive approach. It is a testimony to his vision and he is always seeking something more from life. The book is a delight to read and is highly recommended.
