Life Thoughts: Profoundly Wise and Marginally Silly Reflections by Hovig Nassanian presents a collection of musings, quotes, and anecdotal stories interwoven with music recommendations. Nassanian addresses themes such as parenthood’s emotional spectrum, comparing creative processes to childbirth, and recounts personal family experiences, including his grandmother Maida’s influence and tribute compositions inspired by her and his wife’s rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis. He reflects on music as therapy during challenging times like the Covid-19 lockdown and describes cultural practices, such as selecting a Christmas tree in Sweden, and Armenian family customs linked to the term “amot.” The book includes a cornucopia of meditations about daily life, technology, social behavior, and cultural differences in his marriage, alongside references to specific musical works and podcasts tied to many of them.

Life Thoughts, written by Hovig Nassanian and illustrated by Sophie Frangi, offers a delightful blend of thoughtful writing and playful artistry. Nassanian’s prose jumps back and forth between a conversational stream of consciousness and punchy, minimal zingers and one-liners, inviting readers along on a ride that is the perfect blend of humor and sincerity. Frangi’s illustrations are bold and fun, employing a comic book style rendered in sketched monochrome that perfectly complements Nassanian’s lighthearted yet meaningful tone. I most enjoyed the anecdotes that are shared, the standouts being about a dog named Simba, and I chuckled at a suggestion that is made to the dentists of the world. The marriage and cultural nuances between Nassanian and his wife Anna, alongside thoughts on unpredictable weather and travel, add to this unique composition of wisdom and whimsy, and its visual and narrative interactive appeal. Very highly recommended.
