If you look, heroes are all around us, but most are unknown because they appear different than any of us can imagine. The heroes in the book, Little Big Heroes: Guardians of Goodness by Andrew Pompey, introduce children to tiny heroes with superpowers along with beautiful character illustrations. These short stories are ideal for school-age children because they reflect the importance of being a hero in whatever situation that they may face -- whether it’s Super Sally using her flying skills to locate the owner of a lost cat, Captain Cuddles using his hugging abilities to stop the toy-stealing monster, or what about the Amazing Amy who uses her powers to control the water flow from heavy rains by creating a barrier and diverting the water away from several homes to avoid floods and damage. In each of these cases, the superheroes were embraced and cheered on for their great deeds by the townspeople.
I fully enjoyed Little Big Heroes: Guardians of Goodness by Andrew Pompey. It is suitable for any child to either read alone, with their friends, or to be read at bedtime. Children will love seeing how each character uses their superpowers for good, from creating bonds, making a difference, and being a protector to showing courage, all within their neighborhoods. I loved the big hearts of these heroes who were also determined to make their city a better and safer place to live. When thinking about heroes, we may think of it on a grander scale but your child can start right where they are. They may not have superpowers but they possess the ability and skills to take the first steps. These steps can start off small from standing up in what they believe for themselves and others, and being caring and displaying acts of kindness, to embracing challenges and resolving them through positive conflict resolution skills. These acts will make them feel needed, wanted, and accepted, just like the young heroes, causing them to continue this behavior while improving their self-esteem. This book is highly recommended.
