The Last-Place Legends by Kevin Treaccar follows eleven-year-old Rainer Thomas after moving from Georgia to Lakeland, Texas, leaving behind his championship-winning team. In a new town, he joins the Legends, a youth baseball team with uneven skills and uncertain chemistry. Striving to help the Legends become a winning team, he analyzes his teammates’ abilities, adjusts strategies in games, and takes on leadership roles, while clinging to his own drive. Along the way, he forms bonds with players like Joey, Wyatt, and Lorenzo, but each game still presents obstacles. The Legends are continuously bumping against stronger opponents, defensive errors, and high-pressure moments. Rainer must decide whether to prioritize personal performance or team success, and guide the Legends toward victory in their season, and hopefully the playoffs.

It can be really difficult for kids who are changing schools, especially when they feel like they were a big fish in a big pond. In The Last-Place Legends by Kevin Treaccar, younger readers who are displaced from a winning team to a team that looks like it has no hope at all are sure to feel seen. I like that Rainer’s move to Texas introduces him to teammates who bring humor, stubborn habits, and honest reactions, and we witness many hits, miscues, and quick choices. The writing is age-appropriate, and the youth baseball focus was a grand slam for my youngest reader. Better still, we live in England, where baseball isn't prevalent, so, along with a great story about leadership, teamwork, hard work, and acceptance, she also learned loads about the sport itself! Overall, a wonderful and inspiring read.
