Little Z and the Blue Storm Secret by Ann Marie Hannon follows a boy named Kaleb as he navigates some typical but stressful childhood worries. With Halloween approaching, Kaleb finds himself at odds with his friends because he doesn't want to follow the crowd and dress up as a zombie. He's also adjusting to a new baby in the house, leaving him feeling a bit lost․ His Grandma Annie recognizes his 'brain blur' and tells him a story about a character named Little Z who lives in a land of sleet and 'Ghostees.' Little Z is waiting for a secret change to help him gain acceptance․ He soon learns that his own actions and mindset matter more than some big magical fix. Kaleb listens closely, hoping to find a way to solve his problems without letting his worries consume him. Is he going to find a costume that makes him happy instead of just following the crowd?
Ann Marie Hannon’s Little Z and the Blue Storm Secret is a charming children’s story that works really well as a tool for handling social challenges. I love the interactive elements that encourage kids to use big words and talk about their feelings. The fantasy parts of the world are really well done, particularly the little character that shows up during the storm with some great advice. I thought the way the kids interact—both in Kaleb’s world and Little Z’s world—felt exactly like how children behave. I was impressed by the suggestion that staying busy and sharing with others is a good way of teaching children how to manage those anxious feelings. The way the plot focuses on an internal realization instead of a quick fix is a smart touch. I recommend this book to parents who want a story that helps kids find their own voice․
