Is it possible to live a life far from the mundane and conventional demands of day-to-day living? June Burn’s classic memoir Living High answers this question with a resounding, “Yes!” First published in 1941 and recently published as an ebook in its eighth edition, June and Farrar Burn’s memoir proves that living life the way you choose is not only possible but the surest route to a life well lived – and boy, did June and Farrar live. In 1919, they homestead an island off Seattle, Washington, until wanderlust drives them to Alaska to teach the Inuit people. From there, they return to the Seattle area, where they start a family and careers in writing and advertising, taking turns earning a living while their two boys grow up. However, the wanderlust strikes again, and the family embarks on a long American road trip in a homemade camper until they settle (well, as settled as they can be) in Puget Sound and build themselves a cabin.

I love Living High for many reasons. For one, it is an inspirational book; even though it is eighty-five years old, it still has relevance today. It calls to those free spirits who want an unconventional life and teaches not only its possibilities but also the stamina and passion required for it. The book also illustrates the generosity of the human spirit. Wherever they live, June and Farrar find a new family there, demonstrating that our differences are not insurmountable, given an open mind and a good sense of humor. The book, too, is lushly written. June Burn’s optimistic outlook and exquisite descriptions of the natural world make reading Living High a pleasure. I also enjoyed the many photographs scattered among its pages. It is a rare memoir that invites the reader into a family well worth spending some time with.
