Lord of Worth by Philippa Jane Keyworth sees Lady Rebecca embarrassed as she constantly encounters her best friend’s brother, James Worth. She regrets turning down his marriage proposal, but a well-bred lady cannot initiate a discussion of such a topic. The pressure mounts as Lady Goring targets James, seeking an affluent catch for her daughter, Lady Sophia. Lord James’ solution involves inviting a select party to visit Worth Manor where everything threatens to get out of hand! Can James and Rebecca evade the widow’s schemes or will they both be trapped in loveless marriages?
Lord of Worth by Philippa Jane Keyworth is a feel-good historical romance that reveals the petty dramas of Georgian society. I loved the situational comedy that developed as Lady Goring gleans as much information as she can to manipulate and embarrass the main protagonists. Thankfully, close family friendship allows James and Rebecca a small margin of freedom. James makes a wholesome hero as he cares about restoring the family’s reputation for the sake of his sister. Rebecca’s character grows in emotional depth as she begins to see the true strength of character in James and stops looking for shallow and flirtatious mannerisms in a suitor. The romantic tension grows as barriers accumulate between the lovers. I didn’t want to believe Rebecca would lose James, but it was a lot of fun watching her realize she wants what she does not have. This is a charming, entertaining, and relaxing read.
