Stephanie Gurley’s Love Grows Stronger introduces Gurley as a young mother whose plans for a court-reporting profession are altered by a brain tumor discovered after unexplained episodes. Surgery is followed by years of seizures as damaging medication leaves her searching for a way back to herself. During recovery, Gurley begins reconsidering the relationship with God she had once kept at the edges of life. A renewed commitment to Scripture leads her into church fellowship, changing how she understands her place within her family. The memoir follows her from illness into Christian service as she learns to view obedience as the path she believes God has prepared for her. Each chapter closes with reader questions beside a prayer, inviting readers to consider their own relationship with God through her testimony.
Stephanie Gurley’s Love Grows Stronger is an exceptional memoir, and the author writes about her Christian walk with such sincerity that her devotion to God quickly feels familiar. I loved how well she captures friendship, like when Debbie, whom she calls her “mother seed,” keeps encouraging her toward devotion, giving their bond the tenderness of one friend wanting the best for another. Her affection for her students is evident in the book, such as when Crockett becomes upset that swim week is ending, and she sees his wish to remain close as a picture of the love she wants for God. So much of what she shares is helpful to Christian readers seeking a closer relationship with God. Well written and inspiring, readers looking for Christian memoirs with guidance that stays close to the heart long after the final page will adore this.
