Magelica’s Voyage is a fantasy children’s book written by Louise Courey Nadeau. Curious about her parentage, and where she’d come from, twelve-year-old Magelica runs to the cottage from the forest, in order to seek shelter from a sudden storm. At home, Magelica's carer, Gri, runs her a warm bath while retelling the story of how she’d hatched from an egg, atop a silver feather in a large nest. Soaking in the bath, and deep in thought, Magelica is startled when Odin – a purple warblegrif – flies in the window, urgently seeking her help. They set off to see Queen Raya in the Isle of Dreams, as a matter of urgency. Situated atop a giant turtle, the Isle of Dreams is at a loss as Turtle is sad and will not move. Magelica knows exactly what Turtle needs, and with her amazing gift of imagination, a solution is found and Magelica is soon on her way back home, having learned that love is the strongest power of them all.
Fairies, warblegrifs and dragons... oh my! Filled with love, cheer and a massive dose of imagination, Magelica’s Voyage is a wonderfully illustrated children’s book which will turn any frown upside-down. Louise Courey Nadeau’s tale of a young girl, desperately trying to trace her roots, but finding an incredible adventure instead, took me back to the days of my youth, when books of fantasy were innocent, with no blood shed. Every illustration was as colorful as the story was magical. What I enjoyed the most about Magelica’s Voyage is that it teaches the art of distraction, when one becomes consumed with sad thoughts. Although Magelica was unable to solve her own dilemma, her unique talents and abilities enabled her to help other people, not only giving them cause to smile, but also lifting Magelica’s own spirits. I enjoyed each beautifully illustrated page, and recommend Magelica’s Voyage to readers aged 5-12, showing them that there is always hope when difficulty befalls you, and to never give up.
