This is interesting fantastical paranormal but with a good story at its heart. Vern is a dragon private investigator partnered with Catholic Faerie nun Sister Grace. Vern was cursed by St George to live a constructive, good life. The two of them fight evil on either side of the portal which came into being between the mundane (human) world and the faerie realm following a magic accident on the one hand and a nuclear disaster on the other. For this assignment, at their boss the Bishop’s behest, Vern and Grace have to go and keep an eye on the participants at a Mensa convention. It is not going to be easy as they are dealing with brownies, pixies, dwarfs, fairies and two characters called Coyote and Brunhilde who throw some myth and legend into the mix. Vern has to face environmentalists and tourists and warmongers too. Affairs gradually get more and more complicated. This becomes another 'Save the Universe Case' that Vern is getting good at handling.

This is very entertaining, laugh-aloud read. However, it is far from slapstick. The book is cleverly structured and there is a lot of wit and wisdom amongst the hilarity. There are references to TV series and movies that everyone will know and appreciate. The action is crazy and fast-paced and somehow exactly the sort of thing you can imagine these unlikely yet complex and rounded characters are getting up to. This is a book you just can’t put down. It is escapism at its funniest and wittiest. This book is part of a series but works well as a standalone. The author provides enough information for you to pick up the pieces so as to understand all that you need for things to make sense. "Magic, Mensa & Mayhem" is the perfect indulgent read: frantic, fun and fabulous.

I read and enjoyed this book, but when the sequel, Live and Let Fly, came out, I was really blown away by that book which is even better. Both books are very funny, but more than just a laugh-fest. I recommend them both.
