Inspired by his experiences during a semester at sea, Richard S. Hillman's Making Waves follows the story of a group of college/university professors and students on a sea voyage across multiple countries. Professor Joshua Abramson and his wife Camila join a diverse group of professors and students aboard the SS Consonance and set off from Port Miami for an adventure of a lifetime. Over the next few months, the group traverses the seas through the three continents of South America, Africa, and Asia. During his travels, Joshua struggles to rebuff the advances of an attractive fellow professor, sees students rappelling off the ship and having affairs with faculty, almost gets mugged in Brazil, meets Fidel Castro in Cuba, witnesses racism, poverty, and severe wealth disparity, encounters pirates in the Macallan Straits, and much more.
Author Richard S. Hillman infuses plenty of humor, heart, and drama in this captivating slice-of-life adventure that takes you on a journey around the world. Making Waves truly feels like an unforgettable trip you have probably never taken. The plot has the characters experiencing some of the most historically rich, unique, and diverse world cultures while simultaneously witnessing systematic racism, wealth disparity, extreme poverty, crime, etc. There is much to love about this book, from its vibrant cast of characters to Hillman's vivid descriptions of the unique cultures and places that come alive through his vivid prose and make you wish you were on your way for an adventure right now. I was immersed in the pages from start to finish and highly recommend the book to readers who love adventure stories with realistic characters.
