The Legend of Denali (A Wolverine with Heart) by Gregory English is a heartwarming story about Denali, a young wolverine who lives in the cold wilderness of the Alaska Range. Wolverines have a reputation for being tough and picking on other animals. So when Denali and his brother Kusko are born, everyone just assumes they’ll be the same—loud, pushy, always looking for trouble. However, Denali proves everyone wrong; he chooses kindness and friendship over solitude. He befriends Bruno the bear, Gus the moose, Rangle the caribou, and Koyukon the eagle, teaching them where to find food and learning from them about the dangerous pack of wolves and the humans that inhabit the region. Denali continues to be kind to others and curious about humans, in spite of his family's disapproval. His kind deeds result in a miraculous rescue that not only saves one of his friends but also secures his legendary status.

The Legend of Denali isn’t just a sweet story about kindness and friendship—it actually pulls you right into the wilds of Alaska. You’re not just tagging along with the characters; you’re learning real stuff about the land, the animals, and the history that makes the place unique. Gregory English doesn’t just describe the scenery; he really brings it to life, showing you how wolverines live, hunt, and raise their young. It covers seasonal changes and animal migration. Denali's journey is vital because it reminds us not to follow what others expect us to be but to be more compassionate individuals and not judge others before we get to know them. The people in the story, the native Athabaskan Indians, show a deep respect for nature and wildlife. Their way of living encourages readers to think about preserving the world around us. Their tribe passes on teachings across generations about protecting nature through stories like that of Denali. I loved the narrative because it is engaging, with simple language that children can easily understand. This is a great choice for anyone interested in reading about wildlife in Alaska and who would enjoy an inspirational animal story about kindness.

Gregory English’s The Legend of Denali: A Wolverine with Heart is a middle-grade story set in a remote Alaskan valley. This wilderness is dominated by a hierarchy of survival. Little Denali is born into a wolverine family. As a family, the wolverines are known for driving others away. Because of this, Denali's parents teach him that isolation protects their kind, but Denali feels the pull to reach beyond those boundaries and that mindset. As he quietly forms bonds with Bruno, a brown bear, Gus, a powerful moose, Rangle, a wary caribou, and Koyukon, a watchful eagle, he builds trust where suspicion once ruled. His actions unsettle the expectations of both his family and the wider wildlife community. When a new predator enters the valley and puts one of his friends in immediate danger, Denali must decide whether the friendships he has cultivated can withstand a real test. What follows will shape his place in the wilderness and redefine what it means to be a wolverine.

Gregory English’s The Legend of Denali is a middle-grade coming-of-age story steeped in Alaskan wildlife lore, molded as a wilderness fable about courage and friendship. Denali is a wonderful protagonist with a supersized helping of bravery, openly doing the previously unthinkable even when he knows it may divide him from his own family. Bruno, a powerful brown bear known for territorial pride, is brilliantly fleshed out, answering a call at an unexpected moment. The most fascinating of the characters to both my youngest reader and me is the bald eagle Koyukon. From his vantage point, we survey the valley from above, where he is a strategist and guardian, turning his observations into decisive actions. The landscapes and the Alaska Range are brought to life with striking descriptive details, from the rock-strewn river crossing to the dim cabin clearing where firelight flickers against carved beams. Readers who like animal-centric stories with authentic wilderness details will find it here. My youngest reader loved this story. Very highly recommended.

The Legend of Denali: A Wolverine with Heart by Gregory English is an informative and entertaining story about a kind Alaskan wolverine. Deep in the cold wilderness, Denali and his brother, Kusko, are born. Their father is a mean-tempered, solitary wolverine who teaches his children to be the same and how to survive in this region. Denali isn’t your typical wolverine. He is curious, always watching the other animals, and rather than staying by himself, he decides to make friends and to be kind, even if that is not the expected behavior. He learns about the eagles, bears, caribou, wolves, and even the people. And when one of his friends gets into trouble, Denali brings everyone together for an incredible rescue.

The Legend of Denali: A Wolverine with Heart is a lesson-packed story with insightful notes on morals, wildlife ecology, and native culture. Readers learn that apart from being a legend in native folklore, Denali is also named after the tallest peak in North America. The story is very engaging, showing how the animals in the Alaskan wilderness are a community and the way winter influences their behaviors and survival strategies. Gregory English also teaches the reader to respect nature, friendship, and unity instead of division, and how it is important to have personal choices instead of conforming to norms. I loved the way Denali stood his ground even after his family found out what he was doing. Children will learn about the different animals in the Alaskan region. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates stories with lessons on kindness, the beauty of nature, and the importance of working together.

The Legend of Denali by Gregory English is a well-written book that teaches children to be kind and accept their unique differences. In the Alaskan wilderness, Kusko and Denali are born into a wolverine family renowned for being mean, aggressive, and unfriendly. The news of their birth does not please other animals in the community. Denali is different from the rest of his family, as he soon begins to wander far from his den in search of new friends. On his quest to make new friends, Denali encounters Bruno the bear, Gus the moose, Koyukon the wise eagle, and other amazing animals who accept him because of his acts of kindness toward them. However, Denali faces the challenge of revealing his new identity to his parents and brother.

I loved every aspect of this book, especially the positive moral lesson children will learn from it. I loved that every character in the story was well-developed and had enough background information so that readers were not confused. The flashbacks and suspense in the plot were quite brilliant and proved Gregory to be a skilled writer. From this book, I learned details about the Athabaskan Indians and some behaviors of the wolverines that I never knew before. The writing is organized, well-paced, and easy for kids to comprehend. It also features themes of kindness, courage, teamwork, friendship, and more. The story is both inspiring and entertaining. I recommend The Legend of Denali: A Wolverine with Heart by Gregory English to all children and adults who enjoy reading children's books.

The Legend of Denali by Gregory English is a lovely story set in the Alaskan wilderness about a wolverine with heart. Denali is a young wolverine who is nothing like other wolverines. He and his brother Kusko are different—Denali is kind, while Kusko is fierce. Their mother tells them that they can only survive if they are aggressive and trust no one, but Denali doesn’t agree. Right from the start, though, the rest of the animals avoid him, believing him to be a fierce creature, and it’s a struggle for him to prove he is different. Denali sets out on a tough journey to prove that first impressions are not always the right ones, and his acts of kindness help him forge new friendships in the unlikeliest of places.

The Legend of Denali by Gregory English is a wonderful story that teaches young readers so much. Not only is it an adventure, but it also teaches young readers about the wildlife and nature of the Alaskan wilderness. It’s a story of friendship and courage, teaching readers that they can make their own choices about who they are. It teaches that kindness overcomes a lot and that even the smallest act can lead to long-lasting friendships. The main character, Denali, learns to navigate various situations and learns much about life, and although these are animal characters, the lessons translate to human life as well. It’s a unique tale that teaches kids about choosing good over bad and that we all get to choose our own path in life, regardless of what is expected by others. Wonderful story, really well-written, with plenty of lessons for readers to learn.
