With warmth, wonder, and heart, MarlaGran by Maria Lentzou invites young readers on a journey to discover their creative side. Told in English and Spanish, the story introduces readers to a brave young girl named MarlaGran, who leaves her home to find out what it truly means to live creatively. Along the way, she encounters magical creatures while navigating challenges and learns that what she needs has been with her all along; she just had to believe. Along with the story and its exquisite artwork by Claudia Escobar, there are interactive activities, known as the “Innerscape,” featuring drawing prompts. In this part storybook and part journal, MarlaGran encourages children to listen to their hearts, celebrate their individuality, and embrace their emotions.

I was curious the moment I saw the brightly colored cover. MarlaGran by Maria Lentzou made me smile, and the title pulled me in—I just had to find out what it was about. And after reading it, I’m so glad I discovered this story. From an educator’s perspective, I really love how it goes beyond just telling a story. It nurtures creativity, self-awareness, and emotional growth. The interactive “Innerscape” activities are a wonderful addition, inviting kids to draw, reflect, and make the story their own. I even found myself thinking about what I’d create if I were doing them too. As I was reading, I paused to admire the brightly colored illustrations by Claudia Escobar a few times, as they’re so beautiful and will keep children engaged. The book feels like a gentle invitation for both children and adults to explore imagination and emotions together. It would make a fantastic addition to any classroom, therapy space, or home library. I think many kids (and adults, too!) will see a bit of themselves in MarlaGran. I know I did.
