Mastering the Art of Travel by A.J. Weimer is a thoroughly comprehensive, practical guide I wish I had read sooner. It includes so many things I have never thought about. It is about transforming travel from a regular and casual activity into a carefully cultivated skill. The book’s central tool is the “Travel Journal”, a structured notebook in which travelers record essential information before their departure, namely threat levels, emergency contacts, cultural norms, embassy locations, and logistical details. This is something I have never done (at least not so fully). This emphasis on preparation reflects the author’s professional background and his conviction that travel should be approached with the same rigor as any serious craft. However, that is just the beginning.
Mastering the Art of Travel by A.J. Weimer is a guide I enjoyed from the first to the last page, as it points out so many diverse elements that should be taken into account when we plan to travel. I intend to go on holiday during the summer break and will not do so without re-reading this amazing book again. It is a gem of a guide for the traveler. Stylistically, the book blends instructional advice with autobiographical anecdotes, and that is one of the things (as a former American literature teacher) I loved best about it. Guides are interesting and useful, but anecdotes make them so much better. Through real stories and practical instruction, the book helped me develop my judgment and instincts needed to travel intelligently, no matter where I intend to go or with whom I will be traveling. Thank you for such a lovely book! It will be so useful to me and to all travellers.
