Mathsmagica: Tapestry of Shadows by Daniel Stefanov Georgiev is about twins Sova and Nilah, the sole surviving members of the disgraced black magic practitioners from Nocturia, as they pursue opportunities at Mathsmagica Academy. They find an unlikely ally, a light magic practitioner from the opposite end of the spectrum named Evie. As they are exceptionally gifted and attention-grabbing rising stars of the academy, the headmaster ultimately assigns the trio to be Harmony Enforcers. They work as a cohesive team to overcome all obstacles and an ongoing cultural conflict, as well as to protect the school from enigmatic threats from the Fog. However, as the twins learn the truth about themselves, everything becomes more dangerous and complicated, particularly for Sova, who is a vessel for a sleeping dragon. Will he survive the transformation and subdue the dragon inside him as he reaches twenty?
For author Daniel Stefanov Georgiev, math is magic! He immerses readers in a creative, intricately detailed, interesting world built on various kinds of magic systems. He shows how the wonders of magic spells and their elements can be attached to mathematical equations. The writing style is close to descriptive free verse poetry and the well-done illustrations harmonize with the text in a combination that stirs the imagination and engages the reader. The brisk pace abruptly changes at times from low to high action. Character identity is a source of mystery and conflict, slowly revealed in between their adventures, discovery of powers, and exciting battles with fantastical creatures. The latter part of the book gives a surprising curve ball that breaks ground for the succeeding book. It whets readers' anticipation of the further exploration of the world of Mathsmagica as well as the characters' maturation and growth into more complex arcs. Recommended to fantasy/sorcery fans who enjoy riveting action-packed adventures with themes of coming-of-age, self-control, friendship, trust, betrayal, and love.
