Welcome to the wonderful, colorful, and exciting world of tortillas! In this children’s picture book, Elena Gaona shares the delightful story of Maya, Princess of Tortillas. Maya loves tortillas so her mother gives her a freshly made, warm tortilla. She takes the tortillero (a special dish to keep tortillas warm), and the magic begins. The tortillero grows, and soon it is large enough for Maya to climb in it and take an enchanted ride. She visits the fascinating world of tortillas. While there, she shares the history of tortillas, why they are so important for good health, and how they are made. Join this fun and fantastic journey to learn everything you have always wanted to know about this special food. The book has many Spanish words, but Elena explains them all on a child’s level.

I have heard about tortillas, but I never knew so much work and love go into making them. Maya, Princess of Tortillas by Elena Gaona is a great children’s book that gave me a new appreciation for tortillas and will encourage your child to enjoy this cultural food. At the end of the book, Elena gives an authentic, traditional recipe for making your own tortillas. Making these with your children would be an interesting way to introduce your child to a different culture. Evelyn Barajas does a superb job of illustrating the wonders of tortillas. Also, don’t forget to discuss the history of tortillas dating back to the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations. I highly recommend this book to readers from all cultures and backgrounds. This is a delightful way to incorporate history, culture, and unity among different people.
