Mexican Hit Girl by S.C. Smith is the first of a planned series about Mason Church. Church is an ex-military hero who is roped into trying to eliminate part of the strong Mexican drug cartel. He has "issues" related to his service that plague him during his sleeping hours and motivate him during his missions. Church has been recruited by the NCS (National Clandestine Service) and he is being paid big bucks to eliminate a problem for the USA. However, there appears to be a mole in the network and Church's work is undermined at every critical moment. When a young woman named Valentina enters the picture, Church must decide whether the woman is an asset or a liability to the completion of his mission.

Author Smith does a wonderful job of character development. We feel for the troubled Church and we cheer for the need for revenge in the young woman Valentina. We are skillfully led through Mexican Hit Girl with several prospects in mind for the mole. At times, the brutality is disturbing and yet, it not the major focus of the novel. Church is a complex but likeable fellow and most readers will welcome him as the lead in the next book of the series. Although I did not feel that the author was quite in the league of current powerful mystery writers, I did thoroughly enjoy his characterizations of the problems related to the trafficking of drugs between Mexico and the USA. The book is well done and is a good, fast read for those wanting to support an emerging author.
