Midnight Picnic by B.H. Wertz is about three young rat siblings, who call an old oak tree their home. The story follows Sparkle, Jerko, and Ferdie on adventures in the countryside, a forest, and even floating on a river. Early in the story, the three discuss searching for an elusive glowing waterfall. But due to unfortunate circumstances, Ferdie is separated from Sparkle and Jerko. Simultaneously, each rat has an adventure. On his journey back home, Ferdie meets Pippet the toad, who is a very gracious host. Friendship, bravery, survival skills, and teamwork are explored in this whimsical story. The three siblings meet many animals along the way and, over a cup of nettle or elderberry tea, soon become fast friends.

If you agree with the C. S. Lewis quote, “Someday, you will be old enough to start reading fairytales again,” then Midnight Picnic by B. H. Wertz is for you. I enjoyed being whisked away to a remote, ancient field and forest because of its adorable characters, plot, and illustrations. The detailed descriptions of the forest-and-dale setting and the animal dwellings are superb. The accompanying, colorful illustrations are unique and reminiscent of the classic Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel. My favorite picture is of dancing chipmunks, rats, and squirrels being serenaded by a cricket band under a willow tree. Fireflies illuminate the enchanting scene. What surprised and delighted me was the depth of character that Wertz has developed for each character. Lessons of kindness, friendship, and bravery are taught. One of the most memorable books I read as a child was Stuart Little by E. B. White. The same is true of Midnight Picnic. Anyone who appreciates imaginative children’s stories and artwork will fall in love with this tale.
