Minerva is a clever children’s book written by Kathy Johnson. It is a ‘coming of age’ tale about a young witch who reaches the day she receives her wand and magical abilities. First, she must collect the ingredients for her wand. For most young witches and wizards, this is usually an easy task but Minerva has a kind heart and fears hurting the creatures she has to get the list of ingredients from. While some things seem easy, others terrify her. She has to face those fears and find her courage but there is one that threatens to undo all her work, and if she fails she might never receive her magical skills.

In Minerva, the author creates a tender little story about courage and determination. Minerva’s journey from the beginning of the day to the end goes to prove that the things we fear are not always what we think they are. This is a clever world of magic where kindness always makes things better. Minerva meets all kinds of creatures that teach her a new perspective on the realm around her. It is through this experience that she has to find the strength to grow up and become more than she ever thought she could. This book is filled with creativity and vivid characters that create a charming place for Minerva to live with the support of her family and community. I appreciate the little bit of magic this book has sprinkled in my day.
