Mischievous Molly Discovers Her Gift is a children's book written by Nancy Hallowell and Afsoon Kelly, and illustrated by Lauren Zurcher. Always in trouble, Molly refuses to eat her vegetables, never closes the front door behind her, and always tracks mud through the house. She also likes missing the school bus so intentionally sleeps late. Then Molly adopts a dog, Mojo, from the rescue shelter. One day at school, Ms. Kim asks the children, "What is your special gift?" Realizing she is not good at singing, painting, or sports, Molly is upset until her mother suggests she and Mojo visit Molly's friend Ava who is homesick. Ava feels better after patting Mojo. Molly and Mojo then visit the retirement home, where everyone is smiling at their visit. Molly's dad takes the pair to the hospital to assess them. With patients and staff all happy, Mojo is given a special vest, showing she is now an official "Therapy Dog." Finally, Molly realizes she has found her gift.
I love stories with children and animals, and Mischievous Molly Discovers Her Gift certainly delivered. Not only does it tackle social issues with young children, but it brings to light how wonderful it is to adopt an animal from a rescue shelter. Young Molly learned many things from her new furry best friend, and not only did Mojo teach Molly what she is not so good at, but she went on to show the world what she truly does excel at - making people happy in the Therapy Dog Program. Seeing people's faces light up on their arrival would most definitely be a great motivator for a repeat visit, as seen by those at the retirement home and the hospital. Nancy Hallowell and Afsoon Kelly's beautifully written tale now takes pride of place with the wonderful books on my bookshelf, and I highly recommend it be read by those aged 5-12 years of age, as well as all animal lovers.
